The Lorraine Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities was created by the Universities of Lorraine and the CNRS. The aim of the Institute is to promote and to implement interdisciplinary research projects structured in six partially interconnected directions: : Frontiers, territories and exchanges (1), Languages, texts and documents (2), Institution, innovation and transformation (3), Memory and culture (4), Health, quality of life and disability (5) and Sciences and cognition (6).

The Institute currently supports fifty research projects and multi-disciplinary teams (maximum 36 months - 250 to 300 researchers involved). Its Scientific Council evaluating the project consists exclusively of non-Lorraine or foreign members. The Institute has a structuring effect on the whole field of research in Social Sciences and Humanities in Lorraine and most projects would not have been possible without the incentive to interdisciplinary research and cooperation between teams that distinguishes the Institute. Our goal is to situate our research in an international perspective and to promote a research dialogue within the SSH and outside with other sciences. The recent creation of the University of Lorraine will allow the Institute to develop a new articulation with the scientific research poles in Lorraine.
